Appealing to Greed

I’ve been reading a lot about affiliate programs and internet marketing. It seems those who were most successful in this game are either selling something that they’ve created, or are selling somebody else’s product. It makes me wonder whether there’s any form of internet success outside of selling something.

Looking at their infomercials though or their schticks, it seems most of these guys appeal to their readers’ natural sense of greed. Of course people would respond when you present a lot of testimonials on how helpful the product being promoted is and how their lives have changed because of it and how much money they were making.

I have to admit when I read my first squeeze page, I was tempted to reach for my plastic. But I tried reading some other sales pitches and it seems the same message is being repeated over and over again. This product is gonna change your life, its gonna make you rich, blah blah blah.

They kinda remind me of that home shopping network “THESE PRODUCTS CAN BE HAD FOR A SPECIAL PRICE OF ONLY $XXX! BUT IF YOU ORDER NOW, WE WILL GIVE YOU AN 8O% DISCOUNT! AND NOT ONLY THAT, WE’LL EVEN THROW IN A BLENDER FOR FREE!!!”

I let go of my wallet when I started laughing. Surely there are better ways to sell a product. I’m not sure if these folks notice, and I’m also not sure if everyone is feeling this, but the moment I see a squeeze page, I can’t help but feel I’m being conned. But that’s just me.

I guess I will have to leave affiliate marketing alone for now. Maybe when I get a few bucks off my low hanging fruits and I can afford to purchase some of those very promising products, perhaps then I can start. But for now, my battle-cry will still be:

To dollars and cents!
