Domain Name Research

domain name researchIt’s unbelievable how scarce common words have become in the domaining universe. Try and search for a common word attached with a .com in godaddy and see if it’s still available. 99% of the time, somebody has already registered it. Even with the other extensions these common words have been taken! Really, really amazing.

But how do you go about doing your research for available domain names? So far, in my rather short experience with domaineering, I found these method to be the most efficient. If you’re just a newbie in this business like I am, you’re in luck. You won’t have to go through all the pain of searching as I’m sharing my method here with you.

There are actually two ways that I use in coming up with a list of potential domain names.

1. Via a domain suggestion tool. I usually use nametumbler.com for this method. I find their tool very user friendly and if you’re looking for compound words as names. This is it for you. This service is also free so you can use it as often as you want. There’s no need to download as you can do all the research you need in their website. What I do is I generate all the potential domain names I want, copy and paste everything to Microsoft Excel, remove the .com and then go to godaddy.com and check if these are available. Nametumbler can generate a lot of domain names in one go while godadday’s bulk checker can see if these names are still available. GD’s bulk checker can handle up to 500 domain names at a time so it saves you a lot of encoding effort.

2. Via word lists commonly found all over the internet. I usually just search for common words lists, copy and paste them again to excel, and then go over to godaddy and do my research.

If something comes out of the research I then buy them off godaddy.

Here’s one very good tip. If you’re thinking of buying domain names in bulk, I suggest you pair them up with a non-domain purchase in godaddy. You could purchase a cheap hosting plan for example and then pair this with your bulk domain name purchase. This way, you get to buy the domain names at $1.99 each instead of the usual $9.99. There’s no limit as to the number of domains you can buy with this promo so be sure to heed this tip. As you know, a dollar saved is a dollar earned.

To dollars and cents!
