The reason is that if you keep your old blog and not redirect it to your new site, then there's the danger of having duplicate contents which is usually frowned upon by google. I will have to agree with you on the capital letters as to WHY? It really does not make sense that being able to host your blog for free and not buy your own domain. <br/><br/>You own the domain. You build your brand. You can easily transfer later and not loose ranks and seo metrics. These are just some added reasons, apart from yours, why you should have your own custom domain.<br/><br/>Good post. Kudos for this post.
